Meet at Midsummer Farm
On Sat May 27 visit two permaculture sites: an urban garden and a hop farm.
Morning session 9:30am-1:30pm – meet at Midsummer Farm at 9:30am or come early at 8:30am for purchasing plants from the plant sales in the farm. The group will visit Maria Blon’s property in Middletown,NY to witness how a variety of no till methods produce a large amount of food in a small space year round. Learn about how biodigestion is used to produce liquid plant fertilizer and clean cooking fuel from food waste. Learn from her experience to start your Permaculture project this spring. Then visit Joe Gregoire’s Hop Shepherd Hopyard in Westtown, NY and learn how permaculture principles were used for site planning and farm design, water storage, gravity irrigation and soil building through multispecies cover cropping in the hopyard. Explore the ideas of stacking functions through woodlot management for silvopasture development with maple syrup, birth sap and mushroom production. The afternoon session from 2-5pm will be a Permaculture Workshop Install Rainwater Catchment System at Maria Blon’s home, 5 Earle Street, Middletown NY. Harvesting rainwater provides an alternative to drinking water for gardening and other uses. Save money by reducing household water usage and keep your plants healthy with non-chlorinated rainwater. Collecting rainwater in barrels reduces flooding and pollution to local streams, rivers and lakes. This workshop offers hands-on experience on installing your rainwater catchment system using your 55-gallon barrel (provided in the workshop for free) and the tools and parts on site (bring your simple tools). Workshop limited to 12 participants. Fee for morning tour fee includes free lunch. Fee for afternoon workshop includes one free 55 gallons barrel and the parts to bring home to install the rain water catchment system.
