Friends of Sterling Forest Information Booth: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Begin your visit to Sterling Forest with a stop at the F.S.F. Information Booth where you can register for today’s programs, chat with our members and learn about our mission and enjoy free refreshments in our outdoor café!
Lecture: History of Sterling Iron Works: 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
Doc Bayne, local historian, will give a lecture and PowerPoint presentation on the history of iron-making at Sterling.
Hike: Bare Rock: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Join members of the F.S.F. for a moderately-paced hike to the Bare Rock Overlook where you will enjoy spectacular views. This is an out-and-back hike of approximately 7.0 miles total. Bring lunch and water.
Hike: Lakeville Iron Works Trail: 10:30 AM – NOON
Doc Bayne will follow-up the morning presentation with a 0.8 mile easy hike along the Lakeville Iron Works Trail.
Hike: South Point: NOON – 1:00 PM
Take a short, 0.4 mile easy hike with members of the F.S.F. to a rock ledge featuring views of Sterling Lake and learn how to “Leave No Trace” when enjoying the outdoors.
Lecture: The Chain That Saved the Colonies: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
To stop the British invasion of the New England colonies during the American Revolution, Peter Townsend manufactured a Great Chain for the Continental Army at Sterling Forest. It was placed across the Hudson River at West Point. Join Doc Bayne for a PowerPoint presentation on The Chain That Saved the Colonies.
Hike: Sterling Lake Loop: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Join members of the F.S.F. for a moderately-paced 4.0 mile hike around picturesque Sterling Lake and learn how to identify the trees we pass along the way.
Hike: Sterling Forge Site: 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Doc Bayne will follow-up the afternoon presentation with a visit to the site of the Sterling Forge. We will carpool and then walk the site.
