In honor of Women’s History Month, Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, in Newburgh, will hold its annual program, The General’s Lady, Sunday, March 22nd at 2:00 PM. Inspired by Martha Washington, this event pays tribute to both the impact of noteworthy historical women, and to contemporary women making a difference in the field of history and preservation in the Hudson Valley.
Natalie Karl, an adjunct at SUNY New Paltz, will be the Guest Speaker. Her topic is “Victoria Woodhull and Belva Lockwood – First Women to Run for the Presidency.”
Also celebrated on this day is the 2020 Martha Washington Woman of History Award, which recognizes a woman’s outstanding contribution to Hudson Valley history. This year’s recipient is Kinderhook Municipal Historian and Preservationist, Ruth Piwonka, who has been an independent curator and researcher of Dutch heritage and Hudson Valley material culture for over 50 years.
The public is invited to attend. Admission is free. Call for details or directions.
